Grounds Department Assistant Manager

Ocala, FL

We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Grounds Department Assistant Manager to support daily operations in our landscaping department. This role will work closely with the Horticulturist to maintain a high standard of care across lawns, landscape beds, walkways and nurseries. The ideal candidate has hands-on landscaping experience, excellent organizational skills, and the ability to lead by example.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Communicate with Horticulturist on daily task assignments and upcoming project schedules.
  • Train, motivate, and lead landscape team on daily tasks- lead by example.
  • Delegate work efficiently to team members.
  • Supervise and work alongside grounds staff to ensure all work meets quality and safety standards.
  • Identify and address any landscaping issues or hazards promptly.
  • Monitor supplies and equipment inventory; place orders as needed but within budget.
  • Coordinate seasonal cleanups, planting schedules, pest control, and soil management.
  • Excellent communication skills with employees, other departments and contractors.
  • Performs landscaping activities with the team, including hand pruning trees and shrubs, trimming and edging, mowing, weed control and attention to detail on event setup projects.
  • Follow and expand upon an existing IPM program

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to work outdoors in various weather conditions (heat, cold, rain).
  • Ability to walk, stand, kneel, bend, and lift for extended periods.
  • Capable of lifting up to 50 pounds regularly.
  • Must be able to operate power tools, lawn equipment, and machinery safely.
  • Willingness to work in physically demanding environments and assist with manual labor as needed.

Qualifications, Education, Experience, Skills, and Abilities:

  • 2+ years of experience in landscaping or grounds maintenance (management experience is a plus).
  • Strong knowledge of landscape maintenance, irrigation systems, planting, pruning, and turf care.
  • Ability to lead a team and communicate effectively with staff.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Ability to obtain a Florida Commercial Pesticide Applicators License.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) is a plus.
